Cloud Storage Service Announced By BitTorrent, Sync Alpha Testers Needed

Peer-to-peer file sharing network BitTorrent has announced a new service similar in nature to Dropbox, iCloud, and other cloud storage solutions, according to various media reports published late last week.
The company’s file backup and syncing service is known as Sync, and according to NBC News reporter Devin Coldewey, it “has an eye towards power users and privacy.” Like other popular cloud storage services, Sync will allow users to securely save various types of files remotely and access them at any time, from any location.
However, rather than store the files directly to a server, Coldewey said that Sync will make files available on any authorized computer or device using the BitTorrent network. For example, it can be used to store a home movie file that is too large for other, size-limited cloud storage programs, and that file can be accessed by computers in other locations, tablets, and even smartphones.
The Next Web reports that the secure, distributed technology service is currently in a pre-Alpha stage at this time and won’t be available for a few months.
However, they also note that the developers are accepting a limited number of applications to help test out the client. Interested parties can apply online by filling out a questionnaire at BitTorrent’s Labs page.
Despite the fact that it is in the early stages of development, Sync does appear to have “a number of benefits” over similar services, claims Slashgear’s Eric Abent.
“It means you won’t be subject to size restrictions like you are with other services,” he said. Since the service will be “free to use,” clients “won’t have to worry” about caps on the amount of data they can transfer from one device to another, “which probably sounds like a Godsend to those who constantly have to rely on cloud services to move files between devices,” Abent added.
Further details are “scarce” at this time, The Next Web said, though they were able to glean some additional information about the service from a screenshot posted on BitTorrent’s blog.
For one thing, the image clearly depicts “a separate window, entitled ‘SyncApp,” that includes five unique tabs – Devices, Folders, Transfers, History, and Preferences. In addition, the website said that a “smartphone icon in the top-left hand corner” suggests “a future release on mobile devices.”
