The super speedy gigabit broadband is available to only a handful of communities across USA. So, there’s a good chance that you haven’t got to experience its power yet.
During a conference of the U.S mayors, the chairman of FCC Julius Genachoski, in the effort for expanding the gigabit internet access nationwide called for a program named the ‘Gigabit City Challenge’. He urged all the broadband service providers and the municipal chiefs to come together and work for building the infrastructure necessary to spread the gigabit web. He wants to see at least one community using the ultra speed gigabit internet service in every state by 2015.
In a statement Genachoski said that there’s a lot to understand about infrastructure from America’s economic past. He hopes to bring more people in touch with this groundbreaking technology and turn those communities into innovation nucleuses.
The gigabit internet is almost 100 times faster than the average broadband provided today to general households and businesses. According the FCC data, these fiber based broadband connections are now available to about 42 areas in 14 states.
Right now the gigabit internet connections are being set up in several areas. Google is pitching in with its ‘Google Fiber’ project. They have already started in Kansas City from past November. Seattle has started its project covering 50,000 households and offices in 12 neighborhoods at the beginning stage.
