Zynga’s Farmville Sequel is a Hit
Sequels are very dangerous in the gaming industry, and for Zynga, a social game developer, it was even dicey due to its current condition. Of course a sequel helps in expanding the life of Farmville, but if it backfired, the original game may have lost its popularity.
If the sequel doesn’t work well, it can destroy the image of the entire series. This happened with Mafia Wars and its sequel Mafia Wars 2; the company had to shut down the entire game franchise. But Farmville has a completely different story and it’s a successful one.
Farmville 2 with 3D graphics has retained a top position from the day it was released in last fall. The sequel truly stood out from recent Zynga developments, unlike Cityville 2 which immediately lost traffic.
Zynga lately revealed some stats regarding Farmville 2, which was a huge risk the company had ever taken. The original game was the top money maker for it since 2009, and accounted for 20 per cent of its total revenue in the third quarter last year.
Zynga was super protective before launching the follow-up game and tested it in the Philippines with the name of Big Harvest. Now the company’s true position would be evident, once it discloses the financial information of Farmville 2.
For now, Farmville 2 has 42.4 million monthly users and 7.4 million daily users, as per a research conducted by AppData.
