(Before It's News)

Mobile network operator Tata Docomo has announced that it will be launching its e-commerce website next month. The website could be up in the next 2-3 weeks, reports the Indian Digital Review. The company has already set up a shop on Facebook more than month back.

Tata Docomo

This is part of their larger customer acquisition strategy that seeks to offer everything related to Tata Docomo starting from the SIM card to packs and other products on their online store. Currently, the operator’s online portal only allows recharges. They are now looking at a situation where a customer can order everything online and those thing will be  to the customer’s address.

According to Praveen Gupta, General Manager of Brand Marketing of Tata Teleservices, the company is banking on Digital driving 10% of their total revenue in the next 3 years. To get this done, the company is also looking at selling VAS services including ringtones, music, sports etc. on the online store.

Does Tata Docomo really require an online store?

Well, yes it does. The whole thing is very convenient to the consumer. Having stuff delivered to your home is much better than hunting for it in some shop. Recharges, packs, SIM cards etc. can thus become easily accessible. Everyone does recharges online. There are 3rd party companies like PayTM, Freecharge and so on which do that. Network operators need to add more options to their online stores so that people can get everything related to their network operator on one platform. According to current consumption and buying patterns getting 10% of the revenue from digital in a 3 year time frame is not a bad target and is actually pretty doable, if they can get people interested enough to keep coming back and buying stuff. This is where VAS especially music comes into play.
