Blackberry has released its earning report for the last quarter of the financial year 2012-13. The report states that the company has posted an operating profit of $94 million on its $2.7 billion revenue. The profits are not all that high but this quarter marks a big transition for the Canadian based smartphone maker which has clearly seen better days. The company has now changed its name from RIM to Blackberry and has been pushing its BB 10 platform hard on media channels.
The report also points out that Blackberry has lost around 3 million subscribers during the final quarter. That is not an unexpected outcome as the company has been bleeding customers due to delays in launching the BB 10 platform and the general inability of previous Blackberry platforms to adapt towards modern smartphone paradigms since the last two years. The new platform is Blackberry’s saving grace in my opinion. While it may not displace the Apples and Androids overnight, it is quite a capable platform with many good improvements. The enterprise capability of the new platform is intact and there have been major improvements in user centric areas like design, usability and the apps. Recently, the company announced that it had crossed the 1 lakh app milestone on Blackberry world.
In terms of sales, the company said that it had sold 6 million Blackberry devices in the last 3 months. Out of this 1 million units are those sporting BB 10. Not quite the estimates that the company and analysts were looking for, however the report takes in the end date as March 2nd, 2013. Thorstein Heinz had said that there had been some good reception towards the device worldwide and especially from India.

Mike Lazaridis, the co-founder of RIM (now Blackberry) has now left Blackberry. The news came shortly after the company released its earnings report. Mike was co-CEO of the company till he stepped down more than a year back along with Jim Balsillie. Mike was on the board of the company as Vice Chairman till now. The exit of Mike follows that of Balsillie, who left the company previously.
This is what Mike had to say about his move,
“With the launch of BlackBerry 10, I believe I have fulfilled my commitment to the Board… I believe I am leaving the company in good hands.”
With this, both the founders who helped build Blackberry are out of the picture. Although they were instrumental in making Blackberry reach its zenith during its heydays, they were also responsible for its decline because they did not keep up with competitors like Google, Samsung, Apple etc. in making new innovative smartphones.
