In the email app world Mailbox is the baby – a smart baby. In its first month of existence, though, Mailbox has quickly generated two distinct camps: those who love the approach to email that Mailbox has taken and those that see it is a waste and more of a distraction than aide. Personal preferences aside, it’s clear that Mailbox is being asked to scale very quickly. After today, that scaling might get a bit easier. Mailbox just announced that they are being acquired by Dropbox.
Maybe it’s the “box” in the name. Maybe it’s the unique twist to email Mailbox presented. And maybe it’s something we have yet to learn about. Either way, this is pretty huge. According to Mailbox CEO Gentry Underwood in a blog post on the company’s blog, Mailbox isn’t going away. Instead, the newfound partner in Dropbox will help Mailbox to better provide for end users by being able to scale faster and more efficiently with Dropbox’s resources now behind them.
No word yet on the sale price Dropbox had to pay.
The obvious benefits of such a move would be some cloud storage provided by Dropbox being tightly integrated into email via Mailbox. But what we’re conjuring up in our heads is a grand world where Mailbox goes multi-platform, you know, because that’s exactly what Dropbox is. This will be one of the more interesting acquisitions to follow in the coming weeks and months we think. You?
