(Before It's News)

Facebook plans to introduce a way to filter the News Feed in their 7 March press event at its Menlo Park headquarters. The event is Facebook’s second event this year after the launch of Facebook’s personalized Graph Search. The News Feed is that center column of status updates, photo albums, and news stories you see every time you go to Facebook account.

According to the changes, the new main page will filter content by type to pull out photos, music, with larger images overall and larger images for advertisements. The Photos feed will now include both Facebook and Instagram photos. There could possibly also be a full-screen option for viewing photos. This will be the biggest step for Facebook along with Instagram after acquiring it last year. With the redesigned Music Feed, users will be able to view what their friends are listening and check up concerts and music events. As expected, the Music Feed also integrates with music streaming services such as Spotify and Rdio.
Since Mark Zuckerberg has himself stated earlier that the ads were doing very well and the revamped Facebook News Feed will also bring about better ads, bigger pictures and richer video content to the networking site. The social network also plans to put currently buried feeds like Pages users have liked in a more central and easier to access section, along with information pulled in by the ever expanding number of services linked to one’s Facebook ID. Facebook users should get ready to see ads everywhere; this time, the ads are gonna get vivid and large. Facebook is also reportedly experimenting with an overhaul of the profile design, which frankly, is a change happening a bit too fast.
There is no confirmation regarding the revamped views for the mobile apps, despite Facebook stating that Mobile has become one of its top priorities for 2013.
In my opinion, Facebook’s overall idea seems to be to give us more content, more news feeds and ads. Currently, a lot of people are complaining about the News Feed, claiming that they’ve tweaked it in order to give prominent positions to sponsored ads. The revamped News feed will only increase criticism on Facebook in this regard. Facebook didn’t always have ads in its News Feed, the central stream of updates from friends and brands that appears when you log into the site. By logic, the sponsored ads and posts and posts are taking up the space that used to be occupied by free or un-paid posts. All these changes, I presume, are a part of the company’s efforts to wring more revenue from the web as users increasingly access the network on mobile devices.
On the other hand, I strongly feel that the changes in the News Feed will provide Facebook users with finer-grained control over their the content they see. Advertisers and brands must be quietly pleased, for Facebook could now well be on its way to become the most favored destination for online social advertising. The News Feed is, after all, one of the most important pillars of Facebook(the other two being Timeline and Graph Search), so any changes need to be rolled out carefully.
Let’s see what’s in store for us on this upcoming event, I fairly expect some kind of controversy to kick up on Thursday.
