The ‘National IPv6 Depolyment Roadmap Version II,’ a document containing policy guidelines for transition towards IPv6 addresses has been released by the Union Minister for IT and Communications, Kapil Sibal. The document has been prepared by the NT Cell of the government’s Department of Telecom (DOT).
Elaborating on the importance of Internet in today’s digital age, Sibal said, “Internet is an important tool to connect not only people but people and devices. The explosive growth of mobile subscribers and exponential growth of data has made it imperative to transit to IPv6 to move to a smart knowledge society. IPv6 is a limitless highway and the challenge is to bridge the gap between IPv4 and IPv6.”
He further added that Internet of Things (IoT) offers an immense opportunity for India whereby products & services based on IPv6 can be manufactured here and exported globally. He said that IPv6 based innovative applications in areas like rural emergency healthcare tele-education, smart metering, smart grid, smart building, smart city etc. have tremendous potential to boost the socio-economic development of the country.
Mr. Chandrashekhar, the Secretary of DOT emphasized the need for a gradual and planned transition from IPv4 to IPv6 addresses. At the event at Sanchar Bhawan, Mr. RK Bhatnagar, a member of DOT, presented the brief situation of the IPv6 scenario in our country. As per the roadmap details talked about at the event, he said that the government has also planned to set up a India IPv6 Centre of Innovation to aid DOT and all the other concerned agencies in creating transition towards IPv6.
Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the latest revision of the Internet Protocol (IP), the communications protocol that routes traffic across the Internet. It is intended to replace IPv4, which still carries the vast majority of Internet traffic as of 2013. IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to deal with the long-anticipated problem of IPv4 address exhaustion.
Enabling of IPv6 will only lead to better times for all Indian Internet users. It may be noted that the IT ministry is taking several initiatives in order to make the transition to IPv6 smoother. Earlier in March, it introduced the National Internet Registry(NIR) to facilitate the allocation of IP addresses to Indian service providers. In November last year, it kickstarted the mammoth project to begin issuing of IPv6 addresses in India. I’m pleased to observe that deployment of IPv6 is accelerating not only in the world, but also in India.
