Big Story Weather from October 29:
No severe weather reported was reported yesterday, however, the winter side of the storm brought snowfall totals that ranged from 2-4 inches in South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Utah. 2-5 inches of snow fell in parts of Nevada. New Hampshire also received around 1-2 inches in the higher elevations.
Big Story Weather Discussion for October 30:
Surface Map 11AM: High pressure off the Mid-Atlantic coast will provide the East Coast with another day of nice weather. A strong storm system will move into the Southern Plains. Look for rain showers to extend from the Great Lakes to the Southern Plains. There is another chance for severe weather over the Southern Plains as well. The Western US will enjoy nice weather.
Surface Map 11PM: Low pressure will move into the Central Plains. The cold front will extend into the Southern Plains and also push slowly into the Gulf Coast. This will be the focus of heavy rains and severe weather. Over the Great Lakes ahead of the warm front expect to see showers and some moderate rainfall. High pressure will push into the Rockies and bring a nice but cold evening to the region.
Severe Weather: There will be a threat along the cold front from Southern Missouri into Eastern Texas. The biggest threat looks to be damaging winds and a few isolated tornadoes.
Winter Weather: There will be some snowfall over the Colorado Rockies again today behind the low pressure system.
Flooding: There will be an increase in flooding potential over the Southern Plains and into the Mid-Mississippi River Valley due to the heavy rainfall potential.
Tropical Weather: No impacts across the Atlantic Basin.
Winds: Strong winds will be found behind the cold front over the Rockies an pushing into the Northern Plains overnight with winds in the 30-50mph range possible.

Question: What makes the bright white clouds have a dark bottom to them?
Answer: For this we are looking at the cumulus cloud family. When you have a puffy cumulus cloud in the sky, you will see a white appearance. However, when this cloud grows in size, it becomes a towering cumulus cloud. This now supports moisture giving way to a dark base of the cloud. Then when you get the largest cumulus cloud of the family, the cumulus-nimbus cloud, this cloud is very dark for multiple reasons. The base has plenty of rainfall and moisture giving it a dark appearance, however there could also be a tornado at the base of this could be picking up dust and debris from the ground giving it the darker appearance as well.

October 30, 2013 Storm Tracker Update:
Latest Right Image: Tropical Storm Krosa is currently moving due west and is expected to make landfall near Manila PI.
Eastern Pacific Ocean: Tropical Depression Raymond continues to weaken as it moves towards the Baja. Low pressure over Western Canada will bring rain and snow to the region. Low pressure moving out of Colorado will bring rain, snow and severe weather to the region.
Atlantic Ocean: Low pressure to the southwest of Greenland will bring showers and snow showers to the region. This will extend into portions of Eastern Canada as well. A strong storm system is still impacting portions of Central Europe with strong winds, heavy rains and mountain snows.
Western Pacific: Tropical Storm Krosa has winds around 40kts and pressure near 993mb. The storm is forecasted to gain some strength as it moves due west. Low pressure off the coast of Japan will bring high seas to Eastern Japan. Low pressure over Southwest China will make its way northeastward bringing rain to the valleys and snow to the higher elevations.
Indian Ocean: Low pressure moving over the open waters will have no impacts, however a second low pressure moving through portions of Southeast Asia will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region.
Southern Hemisphere: Multiple low pressure areas moving through the region with impacts being felt over Southern Africa with high winds. Another area of low pressure will bring increasing clouds and showers to Southwest Australia as the day goes on.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for October 30, 2013:
Day 1-3: High pressure will keep the Eastern US nice for another day. A storm system will push into the Southern Plains and will bring heavy snows to the Colorado Rockies, severe weather to the Southern Plains, and heavy rainfall from the Great Lakes to Southeast Texas. Some flooding will be possible. High pressure will also keep the Western US and Northern Plains nice today. Day two low pressure will slide into the Great Lakes setting the stage for heavy rainfall over the Lakes. There will also be thunderstorms from the Ohio River Valley to the Gulf Coast. Severe weather will also be possible from the Tennessee River Valley to the Gulf Coast. High pressure will keep the Plains and the Western US nice through the day. The period will finish with the cold front extending across the entire East Coast back into the Gulf Coast. Expect to see showers, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms along the Southeast and Gulf Coast, some of which may be severe. High pressure will keep the rest of the country fairly dry and cool.
Day 4-7: The period will start with a few showers and snow showers over the Great Lakes. High pressure sill settle into the Southern Plains bringing cool weather to the region. This will extend through the Northern Plains and into the Gulf Coast as well. A new storm will push into the Pacific Northwest with heavy rainfall and mountain snows. Day five high pressure will dominate the weather from the Plains to the East Coast. A new storm system will push into the Rockies bringing rain and snow to the area. The Western US will dry back out again. Day six high pressure will be along the East Coast and a storm system will be developing in Texas bringing showers and thunderstorms to the area. A second low will be pushing through the Northern Plains with showers. Another storm will enter the Pacific Northwest with more rain and snow. The period will finish with a strong low pressure and cold front dominating the weather from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast. Expect to see showers and thunderstorms and some severe weather over the Gulf Coast.
Day 8-12: The period will start with a significant storm system along the Eastern US bringing heavy rains, higher elevation snows and thunderstorms to the area. Some severe storms may be possible in the Southeast. High pressure will settle in over the Northern Plains, while a new storm system enters the Pacific Northwest. Day ten high pressure will be over the Eastern US, while a new storm system pushes out of the Pacific Northwest and into the Northern Rockies. The period will finish with a pretty tranquil weather pattern across the region.
Long Range Outlook: The period will start with high pressures along both coasts which will provide the majority of the country with partly cloudy skies and cool weather for the east and warmer weather for the west. The middle of the period high pressure will dominate the Eastern US. A strong storm system will push into the Pacific Northwest and Rockies bringing rain and higher elevation snows. The end of the period will have high pressure along the East Coast and a storm system moving through the Plains extending into the Gulf Coast. Expect to see rain and snow over the Northern Plains, while rain and thunderstorms will be possible from the Southern Plains to the Gulf Coast. This storm system will be followed up by another storm system pushing into the Pacific Northwest bringing rain and higher elevation snows to the region.
Green Energy Report for October 30:
Wave Energy: There will be slight to moderate amount of energy along the entire Eastern US. The Gulf Coast will see moderate amounts of energy as the winds blow onshore. The Southwest and Pacific Northwest will also have moderate amounts of energy today.
Hydro Energy: There will be ample amounts of long term energy over the Colorado Rockies today. There will also be moderate amounts of short term energy from the Great Lakes to the Southern Plains ahead of the cold front.
Solar Energy: The best places for solar energy today will be over the Northeast extending into the Mid-Atlantic and over the Southeast. There will also be ample amounts of energy over the Northern Plains. The third best place today will be most of the West Coast from the Pacific Northwest to the Southwest.
Wind Energy: The strongest amounts of wind energy today will come from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Mississippi River Valley and back into Southeast Texas right behind the cold front.

Return flow will setup over the region today ahead of the next cold front giving way to a warm and muggy day.
Dining: There will be no issues with enjoying lunch on the beach or at the boardwalk.
Transportation: There will be no weather delays on the roads or at the airport.
Shopping: Today will be a wonderful day to get out and enjoy some shopping at the malls.
Electricity: The return flow will bring warmer air into the region and will create a window of cooling that will be needed between 11AM and 7PM today. The forecast is for 12CDD’s on the day.
Yard Work: Today will be a nice day to get out and start clearing up some the leaves or get the grass cut. The gardens will also enjoy a nice growing day with the forecast for 27GDD’s on the day.
Construction: There will be no issues with the weather today to get those outdoor projects done. There may be some impacts to any elevated crane operations due to the stronger winds though.
Outdoor Venues: Today will be an excellent day to head out to the beach and enjoy the sun, or even take a walk along the boardwalk and enjoy the sunny day.
