Addicted To Retail (ATR) presents: Ace Hotel Shoreditch.
Alex Calderwood, the Seattle-born founder of US hotel brand Ace, has died just seven weeks after the opening of its first venture in Europe. The news has tempered London’s excitement at the arrival of Ace Hotel Shoreditch, a culmination of the brand’s cool style mixed with industrial east London influences.
Universal Design Studio was chosen to take care of the overall design, with the aim of creating spaces and rooms that are more cosy than the usual central London set-up. The lobby is designed with locally-sourced materials and has a cork ceiling, copper lights and timber parquet flooring. Adjacent, is a bar designed by Max Lamb with a 16-seat communal working table made in cast iron, oak and copper.
More than a just a tourist stop-off, Ace Hotel Shoreditch is also intended to be a social hub that brings together several enterprises with a local flavour. Hoi Polloi is an all-day informal restaurant created with Pablo Flack and David Waddington of Bistrotheque. Hattie Fox’s That Flower Shop and Lovage, a stand selling British folk medicine, complete the eclectic trades gathered around the hotel development.
