The US major Apple has plans to run promotional activities around the new iPad models in India, including buyback schemes on old iPads and tablets. As part of its strategy to gain market share, more specifically the market share that has not been captured by any of the high end phone/tablet manufacturers, Apple has decided to open an exchange scheme of sorts, the main motive being price cut on the older iPad mini model in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment to drive volume.
The company with this measure wants to propel the sales of iPads in India where the majority of the buyers are middle class/working class. Getting the tablet and their phones to large multi-brand retailers are also one of the key factors why this scheme is being launched.
Apple is among one of the few companies that is resistant to market forces when it comes to comparing the solidarity in design and deciding prices for flagship products. It is generally taken that Apple’s products boast of an incredible design and minimal design changes over the newer versions of the device. The competitors, now fully adept in making the handhelds to give the iPads stress about market, are churning out the tablets and smartphones of almost the same functionality and design, but better prices which are affordable by people who do not want to spend a lot. This move could be a measure to counter forces that might lead to an eventual ousting of Apple from middle class market.
Apple will sell its two new tablet models – iPad Air and iPad mini with retina display – in India for Rs 35,900 and Rs 28,900, respectively, starting December 7. It is about a month after the global launch of the two devices. Apple is still to make a dent in the market of the subcontinent with sales and revenue numbers. The buyers are eager and it is a rising market, it is a good opportunity for Apple to strike a chord with this market through schemes.
