The pan-India Identity Verification project, innovatively named Aadhaar has apparently surpassed the 500 Million mark.
Aadhaar Card.. Aam Aadmi Ke Pechaan, an ambitious project to cover the entire Indian Population of more than 1.12 Billion, has managed to gain as well as sustain a very healthy momentum. According to the agency responsible in orchestrating the entire project; Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Aadhaar project has successfully enrolled over 500 Million (51 Crores) Indian Citizens.
The pace set by the program will easily put, even popular internet companies, to shame. According to the latest numbers, UIDAI appointed agencies are collectively registering over 1.1 million Aadhaar number per day! The maximum rise in registrations has been seen in this year itself. Within a single year, the UIDAI Aadhaar Project has clocked an impressive 105% growth.
Having issued the first ever Aadhaar card a mere 2 years back, the project appeared to be a very daunting task, especially for a country with such diverse topography and equally diverse, ethnic and regional population. Furthermore, more than 70% of Indians still reside in the rural regions which many-a-times lack even basic amenities that city dwellers take for granted.
The distribution appears skewed though: Even considering the fact that population dispersion is uneven throughout the states, Andhra Pradesh still leads even Maharashtra. But, there is solace in the fact that Eleven States and Unions Territories now have Aadhaar saturation levels of 75% or above.
Why is Aadhaar so critical?
The ambitious project did suffer a few setbacks, but the management team has handled them effectively, just like a committed start-up would’ve and fortunately it has been stuffed with funds on regular basis to execute the task as quickly and smoothly as possible.
With applicability of Aadhaar in mobile connections, banking and other critical Governmental procedures, where identity verification is must, Aadhaar has indeed proven to be the most popular alternative leaving even the Indian Passport far behind. Do you think the Aadhaar project will culminate with equal vigor and grit?
