After recording a great Q4 results yesterday, Facebook has today unveiled its much speculated news reader app. Dubbed as ‘Paper’ the standalone news reader mobile app will roll out to the iPhone on Feb. 3. Unfortunately, the app which is the first product to come out of Facebook’s Creative Labs, will be available only in the US as for now. There are no details of whether or when it will be available worldwide.
Paper is a news curation and reader app that pulls in stories, photos, videos and links from the user’s Facebook feed – alongside Facebook’s own notification bar and action buttons. All stories are displayed on a customisable picture-led grid, and the app has been designed to make it easier to share content with other people. The iOS mobile app displays stories around specific interests and can be customized based on a variety of topics.
The new app will surface content from 19 different “sections,” including sports, tech, pop culture, and “LOL.” The app also has a “Newsfeed” section, which is the same News Feed users are accustomed to on the native apps, but with a new design. Content in these sections is chosen by Facebook editors from new as well-established publications.
People can share, “Like,” and comment on stories. The company hopes people will also be able to connect people through common interests. The app also sports new features like high-resolution panoramic photos, viewable by tilting the phone to explore from corner to corner. It also takes video watching to a new height with full-screen, auto-play videos.
Paper, which has been under development for the past year, is the latest addition to Facebook’s family of single-purpose apps, which includes Messenger for instant messaging and Instagram for sharing photos and videos. It competes with the likes of Google Play Newsstand, Flipbaord, LinkedIn’s Pulse and others.
I really hope the app comes to Android platform and hits worldwide soon. Check out the video to know more about Paper.
