Crowd–funding platform Kickstarter was a victim of organized hacking and the hackers have managed to lay hands on user data.
Confirming the news via a Blog Post, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler said that hackers accessed usernames, email addresses, phone numbers and passwords. In somewhat reassuring manner, the passwords were encrypted, shared Strickler,
“Actual passwords were not revealed, however it is possible for a malicious person with enough computing power to guess and crack an encrypted password, particularly a weak or obvious one,”
What this essentially means, is that the hackers now have multiple details of a Kickstarter User, but they are yet to gain access to the accounts of individuals. Hence Kickstarter added,
“As a precaution, we strongly recommend that you create a new password for your Kickstarter account, and other accounts where you use this password.”
The site further confirmed that financial data hasn’t been touched. Unfortunately, Kickstarter themselves weren’t aware of the attack till law enforcement agencies brought the same to their attention. The company claims that the breach was sealed–off immediately, but the damage to its reputation is palpable,
“We’re incredibly sorry that this happened. We set a very high bar for how we serve our community, and this incident is frustrating and upsetting. We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways.”
Founded about 5 years ago, Kickstarter is one of the famous Crowdfunding platforms that has enabled multiple inventors and entrepreneurs fulfill their dreams of building innovative products and launching them in the market. The site has so far managed to raise US$ 982 Million for more than 56,000 Projects. More than 5.6 million People have pledged support to one or many of these projects.
Despite the fact that financial data was untouched, compromise of such a platform is a serious wake–up call to the companies about being extra vigilant. Are they listening?
