(Before It's News)

Demands about Account Information and Data Removal Requests have jumped for Twitter from the Indian Government.

As per the latest Transparency Report released by Twitter that reveals how the Social Media is perceived by the Governments of various nations, India appears to be increasingly seeking information about Twitter Accounts.

Indian Government made about 19 Information Requests for Twitter Accounts in the latter half–year of 2013. This is more than double as compared to the first–half. The Requests had mention of about 27 Twitter Accounts. But Twitter confirmed it complied with only 32% of the requests and that too by offering partial information.

The quantum may be low, but the increase is sharp: Twitter has over 20 Million subscribers in India. Hence the data requests are miniscule in comparison. However, the increase as compared to just Six Months earlier, the is quite sharp and this means that Twitter is now of increasing interest to the Government.

Apart from Seeking Information, Data Removal Requests too have gone up slightly. There were about 2 requests mandated by the Courts via written Court Orders, while the Government made 6 Removal Requests, but Twitter responded to only 13% of the same. The Removal Requests in all contained curtailment orders for more than 50 Accounts. During this period, Twitter only blocked 13 Tweets in total.

India not at the top of such requests: Unlike Google and Facebook, where USA and India are at the leading position in asking for data and its removal, France seems to be the most persistent country as far as Twitter is concerned. The country made a total of 309 Requests and mentioned about 146 Accounts.

Social Media Portals have become double–edged sword for the Political Parties, where on one hand they are actively using the platform to promote their Parties and Agendas, but on the same time want to limit free–speech that intends to malign or expose them. What do you think?
