(Before It's News)

Microsoft launched their Office Mobile app for Android in India last year. While it was free to download for any Android user, it did require a valid Office 365 account to create and view documents. Besides having the ability to open and edit Office documents (Word, Excel), it could access and edit files from OneDrive.

Now, the company has announced that Office Mobile no longer requires an Office 365 account. Anyone with a Microsoft account can use the app. This is actually pretty great! One wonders why Microsoft is dropping these requirements and basically making Office apps free. Earlier, the company made the decision of making a version OneNote free to use.

Now when I user the app, I can see that it is a good fit among other Microsoft apps like Outlook and OneNote. The interesting part is that Microsoft has a complete productivity suite for the mobile user on Android. When users started adopting iOS and Android, the company still refused to budge from its initial one platform stand and serve the needs of growing smartphone users. Thus there was a big gap in productivity software on mobile. Companies like Google and other startups capitalized on this and delivered their own productivity apps. A few examples are QuickOffice, KingSoft Office and so many others. Users could thus get MS Office level experience and get some work done on the go. At this point, Microsoft probably realized that it was a mistake to not adopt other platforms. Now, they have been aggressively pursuing cross platform compatibility for their services, and it might actually make a difference for the company.

Office Mobile is pretty neat and is well designed. Currently, it lets you create Word and Excel files. Powerpoint files cannot be created but they can be edited. All files are stored on OneDrive and not on local storage. These are some constraints but on the whole the app is pretty awesome.
