When journalists asked particle physicists about “Higgs particle”, particle physicists answered that “it isn’t really a particle, but a mechanism” taking place between the “Higgs field” and “Higgs particles”. The journalists didn’t, however, ask the obvious follow-up question: what is the “Higgs field”? Is it an electromagnetic field or what?
So, now I ask this question. What is the “Higgs field” (meaning, what kind of field is it)? This question can thus not be answered by: the field that gives rise to Higgs particles.
