Bi-magnetic, sandwich-type, composite nanoparticles were synthesized by the topotactic growth of a shell of soft-magnetic maghemite ([gamma]-Fe2 O3 ) on platelet core nanoparticles of hard-magnetic barium hexaferrite (BaFe12 O19 ) in an aqueous suspension.
