It may have been the toughest press conference of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in London on his three-day visit to Britain while briefing to media with his counterpart David Cameron yesterday, November 12.

Modi was forced to face difficult questions from British media including BBC, which asked why the PM has taken such a long time to make a state visit. Why the PM is becoming an increasingly intolerant place.

The PM has also faced massive protests outside of Downing Street in full swing on the first day, Thursday. Protesters were seen carrying signs that read, “Your action is inhuman and against international law” and “Back off India.”

Ahead of his visit, on November 9, a huge projection also appeared on the British Houses of Parliament with text “Modi Not Welcome.”

Modi was banned from entering United Kingdom, alleged to have failed to prevent the 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat when he was the Chief Minister of the state. The ban was however lifted in October 2012.

Similarly, in 2005 he was refused visa by the US on the same basis for being responsible for severe violations of religious freedom.

Meanwhile, Indian and UK have signed over $13.7 billion in deals and have also finalized civil nuclear agreement.
