Mankading earns controversies but it is within the laws of cricket. The latest similar incidence was seen recently in the group game in the under-19 World Cup between West Indies and Zimbabwe.
West Indies qualified by two-run win for the quarterfinals after Keemo Paul Mankaded Richard Ngarava, last batsman of the opponent team. Of course the team earned ire of the cricketing world, but it is fine if we take a look at such incidents at the senior lever over the years.
Bill Brown by Vinoo Mankad
The name Mankad may strike you. The word Mankading in cricket came from him. Way back in 1947 he ran out Bill Brown of Australian team at Sydney in the 2nd Test. The act comes when the batsman leaves crease before the ball is delivered. Amid criticisms Vinoo Mankad received support from Australian skipper Donald Bradman.
Ian Redpath by Charlie Griffith
This Mankading incidence took place in 1969 when Charlie Griffith of West Indies Mankaded Aussie batsman Ian Redpath in the 4th Test at Adelaide. It was a tense run chase. West Indies had set a target of 360 runs for Australia and after the loss of nine wickets they were at 339.
Brian Luckhurst by Greg Chappell
The incidence was in 1975 and first time ever in One-Day International (ODI) Cricket. English batsman Brian Luckhurst was ran out by Aussie’s Greg Chappel claiming he did the Mankading after twice warnings.
The Mankading incidences are interesting. There have been instances when players refused to it or even teams have withdrawn the appeals. In 2012 stand-in Skipper Virender Sehwag of Indian team had withdrawn the appeal after off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin Mankaded Lahiru Thirimanne of Sri Lanka after a warning.
Similarly, Courtney Walsh of West Indies not to Mankad Saleem Jaffar of Pakistan in a World Cup match but it turned costly as the team was eliminated from the tournament.
