Apparel Training & Design Centre (ATDC) Tamil Nadu centres have trained a massive 30, 000 plus candidates in the last 5 years. It has trained more than 3000 candidates under its long term programmes and 28, 000 plus candidates under its Short term (ISDS-SMART) programmes. This has led to a continuous supply of skilled labourers to the textile industry here which as a state has 27% of total employment of textile-yarn-apparel-sector in the country.

Skill upgradation at ATDC

Tirupur which was on the path of becoming the textile hub of the country has been benefitted hugely by ATDC’s presence. It is to the credit of the ATDC centers that the textile and hosiery industry in the area has not faced shortage of skilled weavers and employees. Under the Budget Proposals for 2016-17, Finance Minister, Shri Arun Jaitley emphasized on the need of quality education, skills, and job- creation as the foundation of a strong and stable economy. These words of wisdom may not find appreciation in every realm of the society but when it come to Tirupur in Tamil Nadu, we find it as a perfect example of how Skill development can lead to a miraculous transformation. With nearly 44% of its population employed and registered as ‘main workers’, the skill development thrust has also ensured women development and empowerment. The Textile/garment sector has proven to be a sector where women have achieved better results than their compatriots from the other gender.

The ATDC Hub, Tirupur has 11 centers in its zone, other than the 11 in Chennai zone. These centers were established in the State with the aid and support of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. These centers help in improving the efficiency and productivity of the Garment Industry in the State which is responsible for 27% of total employment of textile-yarn-apparel-sector in the country. The percentage would for sure increase in the upcoming years as thousands of students are transforming into skilled worker who would contribute as and when they join the industry.

Speaking on the role of ATDC in Tamil Nadu *Dr. Darlie Koshy, DG & CEO, ATDC & IAM *said, “Tamil Nadu is ATDC’s best performing state in all respects. ATDC started its first training centre in 1996 in Guindy, Tamil Nadu and commenced its first SMART (ISDS) Centre in Egmore in October 2010. We are proud of “Team ATDC” in Tamil Nadu”

The courses are specially designed to suit the requirements in small & medium level enterprises which dominate the garment industry. *Mr. R. Nagarajan, Principal, ATDC Tirupur,* talking about his center said, “Tirupur has emerged as the capital of Manufacturing Knitwear garments, with Cluster like Chennai, Madurai, Rajapalayam and surrounding areas having the facility of manufacturing both woven and knits. ATDC place a vital role on Skill Development to fill the gap of Industry requirement in both Knits and woven sector. The students trained in our attached centers get their employment locally in manufacturing units and the nearby clusters as mentioned above. Those who recently completed their CAD Program have got placed overseas with M/s.Fairy Group of Companies in Curepipe, Mauritius on
