A strong earthquake in decade of 7.8-magnitude hit Ecuador at around 7 p.m. local time (8 p.m. ET) terrifying people and killed more than 41 on Saturday, April 16.

A 60-year-old resident of Capital Quito city named Maria Torres said the quake was strongest and biggest she has ever felt in her whole life.

A bridge is reported to have collapsed in the Pacific port city of Guayaquil.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was shallow. Its epicenter was some 105 miles from capital Quito, 16 miles southeast of Muisne.

A nationwide state of exception has been declared giving the government expanded authority. The deaths are reported in the northern provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabi and Guayas.

Ecuador Vice President Jorge Glas said, “I was in my house watching a movie and everything started to shake. I ran out into the street and now I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
