Although you may not have heard it by name, there’s a strong chance that you’ve heard it in song. Analog Moog Synthesizers have been used by nearly every well-known pop musician over the past 50 years from Damon Albarn to Frank Zappa.
Now, you can build your own Moog with a little DIY ingenuity and elbow grease thanks to the Werkstatt Workshop.
Billed as Moog Music’s interactive creative learning portal for everything from mod tutorials and lesson plans to 3D printable files and project ideas, the Workshop is more or less Moog’s musical take on today’s development boards such as the Raspberry Pi or Arduino.
To get started, users need to purchase the $219 Moog Werkstatt-Ø1, a patchable, 100% analog synthesizer whose design is based on classic Moog circuits. Although the cost of the kit is significantly more expensive than a $30 Raspberry Pi, it is also significantly cheaper than existing (new) Moog synthesizers that can cost up to four or five figures.

Through assembly and inspired investigation, the Werkstatt-Ø1 is an excellent platform for exploring the world of analog synthesizer circuits. Analog synthesizers have long had their own maker culture born of curious engineers, physicists and hobbyists who have created and crafted their sounds through electronic experimentation.
