“The Nature of Motion” Offers a Peek Behind Design Exploration Processes at Nike

Love ’em or just plain prefer something else, there’s a reason why Nike stays at the top of the innovation food chain. Going all the way back to the original concept of making a shoe from a waffle iron, thinking outside the box has been embedded into the brand’s DNA since day one.

Like Apple’s notoriously secretive Industrial Design studio, Nike’s own Innovation Kitchen – which explores materials and technologies for athletes that are as far as ten years out – has long been off-limits to the press and even most of their own employees. Needless to say, how Nike stays innovative has long been kept under wraps.

This month in Milan for Design Week, however, the company will be showcasing a collection of explorative prototypes that footwear designers created to explore “The Nature of Motion” – a project that coincides with the brand’s latest Free offering, the Free RN Motion Flyknit:

“The Nature of Motion” will be on display at Milan Design Week from April 12 through April 17.
