7473015318 55d1971090 o The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor SurvivalWelcome to this week’s Sunday Survival Buzz – a roundup of preparedness news, tips, articles and recommendations from around the web. But first, an update on my own preps.

There was a lot of prepping activity in the Survival Woman household this week.

First of all, The Survival Husband acquired an AR15 tactical weapon.  I had been a holdout but am now convinced that this was a prudent purchase.  In addition, I received some Starfire 9MM ammo from Lucky Gunner for review purposes.  Alas, one of the problems living here on San Juan Island is that there is no public firing range which makes it very difficult to keep up the shooting skills.  And for sure, as a newbie, I need lots more practice.

This week I received some of the additional books that are part of my Fall Reading list as well as some new books for the Winter Reading list that will be published in January.

The most disappointing part of my preps, however, was the failure of my fruit yeast to produce a viable loaf of bread.  First I tried using the fruit yeast (made with apples, water and a teensy bit of sugar) in the bread machine and then I tried baking bread the old-fashioned way.  Anyone up for a door stop or weapon?

The door stop is on the left

Seriously, though, I reverted to making some bread using regular yeast and that turned out perfect.  Now here is the deal:  instead of using fats or oil, I used my Thrive powdered butter. Oh. My Gosh. The bread was unbelievably good – so good that on my own I ate the whole thing in two days.   The “good” loaf is shown on the right in the photo above.

If you have been following along all these weeks, you will know that I somewhat dissed butter powder as yucky but I have changed my mind.  For baking it is superb – at least in bread.  I liked it so much that I added butter powder to my Shelf Reliance Virtual Online Party.  By the way, a #10 can of powdered butter is $23.79 and you can find it toward the bottom of the order form.

Okay, enough about me.  Let’s get on to the Sunday Survival Buzz.

Survival News & Articles from Around the Web

Missouri bank president pulls gun, nabs masked robber:  You are going to love this one.  I was cheering to myself when I read it but the best part is this:

. . . it says right on the door that concealed weapons are allowed in the bank. They’re practically encouraged by the sign: “Management recognizes the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as an unalienable right of all citizens.”

Why your bank’s website might go down soon, and why hackers seem unstoppable:  Exactly what my BFF George has been saying in his book, Broken Web.

DIY Oxyclean:  I have not tried this one myself yet (and I have been testing a lot of DIY cleaning concoctions lately for an upcoming article) but thought I would share this anyway for all of the do it yourself-ers and frugalistas out there.

Making Do – Increasing resilience in a less-than-ideal home:  At one point or another, I am sure that each of us has wished that we had a home that was bigger, better, more secure, had more storage, was located in a better location or was more survival oriented.  I know that I have been envious of others with a large home – mine is only one bedroom – and a large backyard.  After reading this article, you will appreciate what you have and more fully embrace the concept of “making do”.

Backdoor Survival Tip The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survival

The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor SurvivalIn July 2012,  Hesperian updated their book “Where There is No Dentist”.   You can grab a free copy from their website by clicking here: Where There is No Dentist.  If you prefer a printed copy, the book is readily available at Amazon (Where There Is No Dentist).

The Honor Roll

I made one new addition to the Recommended Sites honor roll this week:  Prepper Dashboard is a one stop prepping site that links you to the best of the web.  Check it out.

The Final Word

I would be remiss if I did not mention that my thoughts are with the many people who are suffering as a result of the recent Superstorm Sandy that hit east coast of the United States this week.  Say what you will about being prepared, but if are forced to evacuate and forced to leave everything behind, all of the preps in the world will not help you.  That is why the Bug-Out-Bag is all-important.

Here in my household, we are putting together a secondary bag for each of us and loading it up with some items that I had previously not considered of dismissed as not necessary.  But more on that another time.

Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Bargain Bin: Some of my best ideas come from readers and today is no exception.  Each of the following items has been recommended by a Backdoor Survival reader.  If you have a favorite item, be sure to let me know.  My own preps are not complete – and never will be – so I always appreciate a good first, hand recommendation for a piece of useful gear.

An Amazing 95 LED Aluminum Flashlight The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survival: 95 LEDs will insure a lot of light.  Not only that, but this reader suggestion is quite a bit less money than the Maglite (although I also own four of those).

Emergency Sleeping Bag and Survival Bag The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survival: One of the lessons from the recent storm is that you may have to evacuate in a hurry.  I have plenty of Mylar Survival blankets but if it cold and the power grid is down, going to bed under my own covers with one of these makes good sense.  Only $7.

Adventure Medical Kits Dental Medic Kit The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survival: Dental emergencies due happen as I can attest to when I developed an abscess while traveling outside of the country.  This is another one of those low cost items that should be in every kit.

Sawyer Complete 4-Liter Dual Bag Water Purifier System The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survival:  According to reader James, Sawyer filters work great and are  guaranteed for over one million gallons! nothing else even comes close.  This is the model he swears by but there are lots of other models of Sawyer water filters The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survival as well.

Wedderspoon Raw Manuka Honey:  According to reader John “ The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survivalthe Queen of medicinal honeys is Manuka honey.  It is such a powerfully antibiotic that it’s been recognized scientifically and the active substance has been isolated. I t is one of the only things that can treat and cure golden staph infections that are totally resistant to all antibiotics. It’s more expensive than normal honey but I have several jars in my emergency survival medical kit.”

Rothco 550 Paracord:  Okay, this one is tried and true but it is something I recommend in every home, every vehicle and every bug-out-bag.  ‘Nuff said.

LS125125Nov2012MH The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor SurvivalThe The big news this month at Emergency Essentials is their Mountain House Sale. You can expect sizable discounts of up to 32% on all types of Mountain House products.

Other specials of note include the Freeze Dried Poultry and Vegetable Combo The Sunday Survival Buzz Volume 37 Backdoor Survival for $114.99. The six #10 tins include Chicken A La King, Chicken Teriyaki, Noodles & Chicken, Rice & Chicken, Broccoli and Green Beans. Now that I have a good supply of bulk foods, I appreciate the convenience of ready-made meals where all you need to do is add some hot or boiling water and you are done.
