The Sunday Survival Buzz – Volume 37
Welcome to this week’s Sunday Survival Buzz – a roundup of preparedness news, tips, articles and recommendations from around the web. But first, an update on my own preps.
There was a lot of prepping activity in the Survival Woman household this week.
First of all, The Survival Husband acquired an AR15 tactical weapon. I had been a holdout but am now convinced that this was a prudent purchase. In addition, I received some Starfire 9MM ammo from Lucky Gunner for review purposes. Alas, one of the problems living here on San Juan Island is that there is no public firing range which makes it very difficult to keep up the shooting skills. And for sure, as a newbie, I need lots more practice.
This week I received some of the additional books that are part of my Fall Reading list as well as some new books for the Winter Reading list that will be published in January.
The most disappointing part of my preps, however, was the failure of my fruit yeast to produce a viable loaf of bread. First I tried using the fruit yeast (made with apples, water and a teensy bit of sugar) in the bread machine and then I tried baking bread the old-fashioned way. Anyone up for a door stop or weapon?

Seriously, though, I reverted to making some bread using regular yeast and that turned out perfect. Now here is the deal: instead of using fats or oil, I used my Thrive powdered butter. Oh. My Gosh. The bread was unbelievably good – so good that on my own I ate the whole thing in two days. The “good” loaf is shown on the right in the photo above.
If you have been following along all these weeks, you will know that I somewhat dissed butter powder as yucky but I have changed my mind. For baking it is superb – at least in bread. Making Do – Increasing resilience in a less-than-ideal home: At one point or another, I am sure that each of us has wished that we had a home that was bigger, better, more secure, had more storage, was located in a better location or was more survival oriented. I know that I have been envious of others with a large home – mine is only one bedroom – and a large backyard. After reading this article, you will appreciate what you have and more fully embrace the concept of “making do”.

The Final Word
I would be remiss if I did not mention that my thoughts are with the many people who are suffering as a result of the recent Superstorm Sandy that hit east coast of the United States this week. Say what you will about being prepared, but if are forced to evacuate and forced to leave everything behind, all of the preps in the world will not help you. That is why the Bug-Out-Bag is all-important.
Here in my household, we are putting together a secondary bag for each of us and loading it up with some items that I had previously not considered of dismissed as not necessary. But more on that another time.
