Hi my fellow hunters, homesteaders and just good old web friends. I finally filled my deer tag this year and still no snow on the ground, maybe when we get some we will really get pounded. I took a walk behind the flatlander place at nine mile and got to the top, of what we call porky pine pinnacle and took a picture and did a deer count. We filled five deer tags this year and I wanted to see how the population looked. I counted 49 mule deer, two out of the 49 were big bucks. on the way down was five white tail deer and two big bucks with them plus the three yearling mule does that hang around the house most the time. So with a mild winter it looks good for next year also but I will be up at the homestead hunting. The second picture shows you one of the reasons Carol and I decided to move. If you notice the roof line (bottom left)and there are five more just like it down the hill a little bit. That used to be part of my hunting ground. They are probably some really nice people that live in those big houses but there is no season on them. Every time one of those houses get built my taxes go up and I’m already hearing rumors that they would like to make this a no shooting zone. Such is progress. Carol just baked two apple pies, one for my trip to the homestead and the other one for here. I will need to refill the bird feeder up there and check and make sure no pack rats have eaten there way in. The non Latin name for the pack rat is , wood rat and they like to chew through wood. I would like to ask some of my readers both in country and out of the country to comment if they have any trouble with rats where they live. We also have some human rats but they usually keep to the city. I have a new pair of snow shoes I want to try out soon at the homestead. My old set was fine except when trying to transverse a hill and the cleats were too small to get a good grip, at which point they turned into skis. Well my friends take care and help some one in need, it’s good for the heart. Happy trails and God bless. Bob & Carol

Mice Rats steel wool stuffed in existing holes they gnawed works as well as around pipes and such that you made in the house, Cayenne pepper sprinkled about they hate, mix it with water and it will stick some what to wood maybe something else added as a bonding agent to keep them from gnawing on the wood around the steel wool, another fix that seals out the weather and cold and the mice and rats seem so far for me not to eat at or like, they seem to leave the area alone after is the caned foam you get in Lows or Home Depo you spray it and it expands to fill the void kind of stuff, I filed some of there holes with it and they left it alone, seem to have left the area there alone too, I could be wrong on that but so far no further damage by rodents, This does not rust out and seals the drafts and seams water proof too, one can can go a ways too, I think the foam is the better so far myself,
Best wishes on the rural living, it sure beats the city.
Thanks, Bob. For mice, a good cat is best. Here in California, the rats can get as big as a small cat, so your best bet is traps baited with peanut butter.
