The Sunday Survival Buzz – Volume 42
Welcome to this week’s Sunday Survival Buzz – a roundup of preparedness news, tips, articles and recommendations from around the web. But first, an update on my own preps.
Sometimes I take my own advice and take a break from prepping. This was one of those weeks. I had a lot of writing to do – both for my weekly piece on the San Juan Islander as well as my monthly article for the Absolute Rights Newsletter, so I let most everything else go. And every once in awhile, you should too!
The one thing I did do – you just knew I could not be a 100% slacker – is mix up some additional test concoctions for DIY cleaning products. After reading some of those really bad DIY cleaning e-books on Amazon (sorry, but I am glad they were free or I would have demanded a refund), I just know that I need to compile all of my recipes and post them here for you. Again, for free.
Okay, enough about me. Let’s get on to the Sunday Survival Buzz.
Survival News & Articles from Around the Web
Before I start, I should mention that I do get a bit frustrated in that by the time Sunday rolls around, many of the articles that I have found are either old news or already plastered all over the internet on other prepping and survival sites. For that reason, I seek out articles that may have a different twist, may have to do with consumer issues, or that simply represent darn good information.
Okay, enough about that. There are a lot of worthwhile articles this week so here we do.
Diabetic Survival in a SHTF Scenario: This is something I do not see addressed too often online. The article starts with “Type 1 diabetics don’t have to count themselves dead when the SHTF if they follow a few prepping tips” and goes on from there. So if this applies to you are someone in your family, take note.
DIY Fire Starter Wafers: This is something I want to try – looks interesting, looks easy, and the end result is useful. You can purchase these cotton makeup-remover pads at your local Walmart, warehouse club, drugstore or Amazon.
A Smartphone Bill under $50? Red Tape readers reveal their cell secrets: If you covet a smart phone but can not stomach the costs (or you want to reduce your costs), you just might pick up a tip or two from this article. In the recent radio show I did on Destiny Survival Radio, I came down hard on smart phone users and probably offended a lot of people. (And to set the record straight, I do want to apologize for that.)
On the other hand, I know of some people that are on the verge of losing their homes yet spend over $300 a month on their phones. Craziness.
LEGO Finds Spare Discontinued Set So Boy Who Saved Up For 2 Years Wouldn’t Be Disappointed: This one is from the “it just warms your heart” department. If you read nothing else today, read this one.
Procedures for Sudden Cardiac Arrest: This is very valuable information to know ~ especially if you encounter someone who has had sudden cardiac arrest. It’s a short video and may help you save a life including instructions for using one of those new, automatic heart restart machines (AED) that are now available in many locations. (There is one available in my neighborhood.)
Knowing the procedures for sudden cardiac arrest doesn’t help you, but let’s hope that someone near you knows what to do if it happens.
Backdoor Survival Reader Tips
My husband is the world’s best scrounger. He was going by a 1920 textile mill that was being torn down. He noticed a steel freight elevator.
He asked if they wanted to get rid of it. They said “It’s yours if you can move it today”. So our walk out basement (aka the bunker) now has a 12′x20′ faraday cage. Hubby welded steel strips around the seams just to be sure it was tight and of course everything was already in metal bins and trunks.
Isn’t it amazing what a little scrounging and creativity can do?
And here is one from “George” in Washington State:
Here’s a cheap alternative method for a shade for oil lamps, use disposable aluminum pie forms (tins), cut a hole out of the center of one so that it can go over the chimney yet it still can rest on the glass of the chimney. For a wall reflector use a disposable turkey roasting pan.
And yet another from “Nelson”. This one has to do with the sooty pots that are a result of cooking outdoors over an open flame such as with a rocket stove:
Coating the bottom and sides of your pots with liquid dish soap will decrease the clean-up. The soot will come off easier.
The last one for today is from “John”:
As a professional blacksmith, I get burned a lot … ok daily. I’ve tried everything, aloe this and that and a host of other products.
What I have found that truly works is, Bag Balm. This product was originally formulated and marketed to dairy farmers to put on cows teats that get rubbed raw from the milking machines. You can get it at most pharmacies, however, you can usually get it at your local feed store cheaper. It comes in a little green tin. It works great for burns, abrasions and superficial cuts. Give it a shot. I swear that you’ll swear by it as well.
