The 2007/8 post-election violence in Kenya devastated the country and shocked the rest of the world. Over 1,200 men, women and children were murdered and half a million were forced to flee from their homes. At the height of the bloodshed and displacement, Genocide Watch classified Kenya as being in the Preparation stage of Genocide. Only as a result of extensive international mediation – after a power-sharing agreement was negotiated – did the frenzy subside.
While there was some compromise at the political level, there has been very little done to address the resulting mass traumatization at the individual level. Four and a half years later, many in the country remain deeply affected. With an influx of guns into the country and the escalation of vitriolic political campaigns, there is a very real and serious danger of renewed violence erupting. “The events of January 2008,” Justice Johann Kriegler warned, “could look like a Christmas party come (the next presidential elections).”
If unresolved psychological trauma is a major factor in repeated cycles of violence, how do we address this trauma? According to the Africa Mental Health Foundation, there are 79 psychiatrists that serve Kenya’s population of 40+ million. That’s one psychiatrist for every 500,000 people. All of the psychiatrists have private practices in urban areas, making it impossible for the many that need professional help to receive it. In addition, most Kenyans earn less than $1/day, so even paying for basic counseling is out of the question.
This is where alternative healing modalities such as Faster EFT can help.
HROC participants using Faster EFT
I learned about this technique when I was dealing with grief from the suicide of a loved one last year. It helped me to cope with very overwhelming emotions, and I immediately shared it with friends and family. The effect that it had on others was so positive that I now share it with as many people as possible. When I was working on “Kenya: Until Hope is Found” in May of this year (2012), I shared Faster EFT with the facilitators of the “Healing and Rebuilding Our Community” workshop. They then invited me to share the technique with the workshop participants on the second day of the workshop which focused on Remembrance and Mourning. I also shared it with many people outside of the workshop as well, with positive results. This inspired me to make the short video about Faster EFT being used in Kibera Slum, the epicenter of the 2007/8 violence.
Robert G. Smith, creator of Faster EFT, describes it as “a collection of new, cutting-edge techniques and processes that integrates the most effective elements of Emotional Freedom Technique, Be Set Free Fast, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Acupressure and the mind’s great ability to transform itself. It can quickly transform how you represent your past, shift your emotional disruptions and restore your physical health. It is a universal healing system that can address virtually anything including, but not limited to the release of Anxiety, Phobias, Depression, Grief & Loss, Insomnia, Fatigue and Trauma Addictions.”
It is my hope that as many people as possible will watch the video and begin to heal from whatever burdens them. I encourage you to try the technique as you watch. If you find it helpful, please share it widely.
