(Before It's News)

A solar charger and a smartphone could be the best hiking tools you could have, they can potentially save your life if you get lost in the wilderness. Last weekend an experienced hiker was reported missing on Mount Hood, she is still reported missing. On Monday, another hiker was found stuck between two rocks for 4-to-6 days without food or water, if it wasn’t for the keen sense of a rescue dog, he would have never been found. These stories should serve as a warning for hikers that are thinking about hitting the trail this year, you never know what situation you might find yourself in the wilderness.

A Smartphone and PCB
The smartphone alone may not be dependable because service is notoriously poor in wilderness areas, but with the help of a Personal Locator Beacon (PCB) like the SPOT Connect, your smartphone would be connected to a global satellite network that lets you send messages and GPS coordinates to emergency personnel from virtually anywhere on the planet. So when you go beyond the reach of the grid, SPOT Connect can keep you in touch with friends, family, and of course emergency personnel. Smartphones could also provide maps, compass, GPS, ebooks, and articles on survival. So having a smartphone and the SPOT Connect would come incredibly useful and can potentially save your life.

A Portable Solar Charger
Without electrical energy in the wilderness you will not be able to use a smartphone or a PCB, that’s why a handheld solar charger is the ultimate must-have tool to carry in any outdoor situation. The Suntactics sCharger is the best choice when it comes to portable solar, no other solar charger is as reliable, it is capable of charging a smartphone in 2 hours or less, it’s water resistant and built like a tank. You can also sun charge USB rechargeable batteries, USB LED headlamps, tablets and other devices.

Hikers, especially solo hikers need these tools with them at all times. Some people would say that cell phones are “not appropriate in a natural environment” and that it “doesn’t promote self reliance”. I would like to hear them say that when they are trapped between 2 rocks for 4 to 6 days, slowly dying a painful death. So this hiking, backpacking, camping, climbing season, carry these essential tools so you can have the security knowing you will always be safe.

  • A Personal Locator Beacon and solar charger seems a good fit; even smart people make odd decisions outdoors…Be safe this summer and take a buddy or two with you….

  • Fianna

Stop thinking just because you drive a subaru, buy all your outdoor gear at REI, and took a few classes, makes you tougher then a Boy Scout.
Its funny how many sheepal fall into the advertising of these companies, thinking that all outdoor fun is going to be “FUN”, never thinking about all the money it takes away from taxpayers to come rescue their sorry a$$!
Dumbing yourself down with Smart Phones, GPS, ,Solar Chargers, PLB’s, etc. is false security, it’s reverse of what you want to do, learn to read a map, compass and terrian, keep your eye open when your out there and get off that phone, pda, etc…………….

    • well what if you’re completely trapped, then what? a map or a compass is not going to help you. So what do you say then? You’ll be saying i wish i did more, i wish i had some way of calling for help. too late, you’re dead.
