The Sunday Survival Buzz – Volume 58
Welcome to this week’s Sunday Survival Buzz – a roundup of preparedness news, tips, articles and recommendations from around the web. But first, an update on my own preps.
This week, with help from Shelly (aka the Survival Husband), I organized all of the gear and food items sitting in my little dining area pending the next step in the review process. Now you may ask: where did all of this stuff come from. Quite honestly, most of it I purchase myself (after all, I need preps too) but some it sent to me by sponsors and by smaller companies that would like to promote their products but do not have the budget to place a banner ad.
But I digress. Between my accounting work (tax season and all that) and my website, these items for testing and review have been piling up. My cottage home is two levels with the bottom floor just one room so you can imagine the mess – and the clutter – I have been dealing with.
Well okay, so this week I put everything that is pending in its own box along with the operating instructions and notes that have been written up so far. Being my worst (or is it best?) enemy, you know how I like to be honest with the reviews and that takes time.
But more about that later. Let’s skip over the gear dilemma for now and get on to the Sunday Survival Buzz.
SURVIVAL NEW AND ARTICLES FROM AROUND THE WEB
This Is What It Feels Like To Have Your Life Savings Confiscated By The Global Elite: This week’s must read is from Michael Snyder. Do I believe that this could happen in the US? Sadly, yes I do. The challenge now is to come up with a strategy to make sure my savings are safe. Obviously, I hope it never gets to this but better to have my eyes wide open then to have them buried in a cloak of denial.
Landslide hits Washington state’s Whidbey Island, destroys one home: I have had a few emails and calls about this wondering if I am okay. This is a different island – but not far away – so yes, I am fine. This is why, however, we need to be prepared to bug out and not bug in. You just never know.

Google adds Street View to ghost town inside Japan nuclear zone: Google Street View is giving the world a rare glimpse into one of Japan’s eerie ghost towns, created when the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami sparked a nuclear disaster that has left the area uninhabitable.
Popular Online Supplier “Renting” Your Email? You Decide: As the article says, you need to decide for yourself whether this accusation is correct. That said, the idea of adding a special code to your name or to your address block when you sign up with a new vendor is not a bad idea. That way if the code shows up on unsolicited mail or email, you will know that the company has sold you out.
The 10 Freest States in the US: Plus the worst. This is an interesting list with North Dakota coming in first and New York the worst. You can find the ranking of your state by using the interactive map toward the end of the article.
SPOTLIGHT ON RIDGERUNNER BELTS
I recently had the pleasure to chatting with Bill Watson at RidgeRunner Belts. Bill makes belts plus rifle slings as well as bracelets and dog leashes – all from high quality “made in the USA” paracord. He offered to send over a couple of items for review and I selected a rifle sling for my new AR22 and a leash for my dog, Tucker.
Now as you know, a rifle sling is an important piece of gear that deserves a full workout in order to be reviewed properly. I set the sling aside for now and immediately took up the leash and used it during my daily hike with Tucker the Dog. And oh my gosh – this is best leash I have every owned. It is nicely braided and is extremely well made and strong. As you can see in the photo, it has a lobster-claw clasp that is going to last – not like those flimsy leashes that you purchase at PetSmart.
Did I mention that the price is only $10 for a small to medium sized dog and $20 for a large dog?

Backdoor Survival Reader Tips

A tidbit I learned watching a show about bee keeping and honey, apparently the government allows mfg. to put up to 60% high fructose corn syrup in their honey and still call it 100% pure, also they do not have to put the syrup on the label. Another reason to buy local from small honey bee keepers. Know the source when ever you can.
The article on How to Recharge Alkaline Batteries has proven to be one of the most popular articles ever here on Backdoor Survival. Reader “Bill” offers the following:
As a knowledgeable electronic type I want to put a little “professional” spin on the battery situation.
The fact that you have worked out a recharging program is good. The first thing I want to say is the recharged batteries may not have the same power capacity they did when brand new. Each time one is successfully recharged it will loose a bit more available power. They won’t last or recharge forever.
One poster mentioned the fire hazard of storing loose batteries. Yes keep them all lined up in the same direction with the cardboard spacers. 9 Volt batteries are the most dangerous to store loose. Put a piece of black electric tape over the terminals. If you bought the batteries in one of those 24 or 48 packs that would be a good place to restore them. One last comment a recharging battery could vent with some force so don’t have the charger located where it could cause harm.
Since writing that article, I have taken Bill’s advice and rearranged my batteries so that they are all set in the same direction with cardboard spaces in between the layers. Of course I still prefer those inexpensive plastic battery cases that I purchase from Amazon but I have so many re-charged batteries that I need to order more.
I like these mini storage cases.

The Final Word

New articles will be posted on Tuesday and Thursdays as usual, and of course there will still be the Saturday Winter Book Festival and the Sunday Survival Buzz.
On the other hand, internet access will be precious if I have any at all so alas, there may not be much the way of Facebook freebies or replies to comments while I am gone. Still, I will do the best I can. Rest assured, I do read everything you send me so that will not change.
