It’s called the “forever flashlight” or “shakelight”, it literally provides UNLIMITED POWER by using magnets. Basically how it works is, you wrap Insulated Magnet Wire around a 1″ PVC pipe, and in the pipe you put a 3/4″ x 1″ Neodymium Magnet into the PVC pipe and cap both ends with some rubber. If you shake the magnet inside the pipe it creates alternating current that can produce up to 4 volts of energy! In this video it explains how to build one:
This is literally unlimited energy that will last a lifetime, magnets don’t wear out. However, if you equip your home made flash lights with LED they will last around 10 years or 50,000 hours.. not unlimited, but close! Keep some spare LEDs with you and in 10 years if they stop working, just replace them! Say goodbye to batteries with the shakelight!

I decided to go the super capacitor flashlight route. I charge them off a small solar panel.

They are good for 500,000 recharges and no shaking.
I should also mention that I get up to 6 hours of run time per charge instead of 10 minutes you get with a shake light. For serious emergency prepping I would go with the 360 hour run time (over 700 hours with an alkaline) $5 flashlight project:

I made a few of the long run time flashlights.
I am a big fan of DIY projects and the shake light project looks like a fun one. I just think that in a long term power outage the shaking thing would get old.
