Sometimes crisis will last longer than you expected. Water is very important in a time of crisis; you have to use your water reserve for drinking only. In this case, you need to find water sources somewhere else. Streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, natural springs and rainwater are the only water sources available in a survival situation. But, you need to purify the water from these sources before you use it. Boiling, distilling and using chemicals such as chlorine and iodine are examples of how to purify water.
You can also use water filtration; there are water filters that you can buy from stores. The LifeStraw is a good water filter to have in your BOB and survival kit; it is very handy and lightweight. This product can remove 99.9% of bacteria and protozoa in contaminated water and you can filter 264 gallons of water by using this product.
If you want to have a good source of food, start a garden. If you have your own garden, you don’t have to depend on commercially produced food and you can save more money. There’s no need to start a big garden, start a small garden first and start planting vegetables and spices that are easy to grow such as beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, and cilantro. Starting a small garden helps you learn the basics of gardening and if you already know the basics, you can now expand your garden and start planting larger variety of crops.
If you have a problem in space, you don’t have to worry; you can plant in containers or raised beds. Make your research on how to start a garden. You would be able to find a lot of resources on the Internet.
You can also learn how to raise livestock, how to can and preserve food, how to hunt for food, or how to forage food.
Learn self-defense skills like martial arts for close combat and weapon trainings to be able to handle firearms properly. In a survival situation people will become dangerous. You need to prioritize the security of your entire family. How can you defend your family if you know nothing about self-defense?
Making fire, building makeshift shelter, locating a good source of water and food, performing first aid, reading map and compass are some skills that you need to learn to be able to survive in the wilderness. Search your area for clinics that are offering basic survival skills courses. You can enroll to one of these clinics and they will teach you the different outdoor survival skills.
During a disaster people will get hurt and there are times that you are far from a hospital or emergency personnel will not be able to get to your location quickly.
