Homemade 600 Watt generator made from an old washing machine! now if you’re going to live off the grid and generate your own power you have to choose how you’re going to provide that power in the most efficient and cost effective way possible. Everything you do must of course be sustainable and allow you to be 100% self reliant and independent. There are many ways to get the job done when considering how you’re going to generate electricity for your homestead. Most likely you’ll have solar panels and probably a wind turbine for a back up or supplemental power. You’ll also probably have a battery bank, and maybe even a back-up battery bank to supply power in the event your main battery bank goes offline for any reason.
Point being you’re going to need a back up eventually, and that is all about being prepared. Being prepared also means you need to have multiple redundent systems in place to supply your electricity in the event one or more of your power generating systems is fried by lighting, a tree falling on your solar panels, a storm knocking out your wind turbine, or an asteroid smashing your battery bank shed. (Hey, it could happen.)
So, it makes sense to have the option to power your homestead with multiple generators. This is how you convert an old washing machine into a generator.
Here’s how to to convert the washing machine into a generator.
Here’s a detailed video on how to rewire the stator.
WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT IF YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH ELECTRICITY!
As with all things safety is paramount, and if you choose to do make one of these make sure you know what you are doing or get an electrician to rewire it for you.
This machine has the potential to power multiple appliances in your home, and best of all it’s powered by water.
I made several windmills from these magnetic state washing machine motors. They come off F&P Washing machines, and some newer US models.
They are good finds.. It’s just a pain to saw the 25mm bearing from the plastic tub.
I’ve got an F&P smart washer that’s seen better days….been thinking about the possibilities. But then I’ve seen what’s just around the corner and it’s not rocket science this time. Truly doable solid state stuff is within arm’s reach these days. I’ve hardly ever had great results with rotary power systems that hold up over the long haul. Always some bearing locking up, or some other failures to deal with. I’d have to say that the recent discoveries in solar and the rather awesome discovery by Stanford regarding the use of nickel plated graphene for hydrogen production are truly inspiring….

After producing VERY cheap graphene in a common lightscribe drive, one can then plate it with cheap and common nickel via electrolysis. Hydrogen home heating and power generation are truly viable for the home handyman at this time.
Have one hydro F&P smart drive generator operating as I write. Purchased 5 years ago from New Zealand. Powerspout is the companies name now.
The 600 watts is a bit of a stretch ! Huge amounts of water flow or a very high head to get up to 600w. Achieving any kind of wattage over 24hrs and however many days the creek flows is good though. Flooded batteries thrive on trickle charging. ,
Been off grid 30+ years and in that time something has always been around the corner, but nothing as yet has come to fruition other than more electronic gadgetry to bolt on to the same prehistoric system. I need the power now,so I am stuck with what is actually available now. It has been very frustrating knowing there are simpler more cost effective power systems either buried or still at the Beta level .
My batteries are 21 years old, made also in New Zealand and are still powering at about 95pc. thanks to the hydro.
These Fisher and Paykel “smart drive” washing machines are very common in Australasia. If you are off grid they are the best for powering off an inverter .
