Gold Flame Spirea
Gold Flame Spirea, Spiraea x bumalda ‘Goldflame’ is extremely colorful and eye catching. It’s easy to grow, easy to propagate and sells like wild fire! I’ve got a few of them planted around the nursery and as soon as people see them they ask about them. This is a plant that we can’t seem to grow enough of.
For years and years and years this has been a good selling plant for me, but when I started back into the nursery business in 2011 I didn’t have a single plant that I could take cuttings from so I desperately need to find some.
But first a few things you should know about me, in case you don’t.
My first backyard nursery was 1/20th of an acre. In 2003 we sold that house and I quit growing for a while. If you haven’t read that story, you should. It’s here. It’s a bit on the ugly side.
Pam and I bought a piece of property and I started growing again in 2011. Since the day we bought that property it has been a crazy ride and I’ve documented it here. I’m really proud of this, I hope you take a look.
Okay, so I desperately need some Gold Flame Spirea so I could start growing and propagating them. I went to Our Members Area, Where Else Right? and asked if anybody had any rooted cuttings that they’d like to sell. This young kid from Clinton, Tennessee said that he had some and would sell them for 60 cents each and probably had around 200 of them. I said; “I’ll take them all.”
Couple of things you should know about that story. Up until I bought those plants from Nathan I knew nothing about him. He was just quietly following along trying to get started growing and selling plants. Since that time he has become an amazing member, selling all kinds of plants to other members, he’s had a few very successful plant sales and I am very proud to just have a small part in any success that he’s had. He was only 18 years old, still in high school, when his mother showed him my website.

When I look at the above photo do you know what I see? Cuttings, cuttings and more cuttings! Just look at all of the cuttings that are ready to stick from just one plant.

The plant with the white flowers is Abbotswood Potentilla. Ignore that for now, I’ll do an article about that as well.
Left unpruned Gold Flame Spirea can grow to a height and width of 36″, but I keep mine trimmed to 18″ high and wide. I won’t say that they are deer resistant, but they most certainly are deer resilient. In other words, if the deer eat them to the ground they’ll come back just fine.
Pictures just don’t do this plant justice. In the spring Gold Flame just screams; “Look at me!” The burnt orange color is breath taking and eye catching. Then again in the fall, they color up again. In June they bloom with lavender flowers. In other words, this is a pretty amazing plant!
And the best part?
Gold Flame Spirea is hardy and easy to grow and propagate.
They root super fast in the summer as Softwood Cuttings and they root just as easily in the winter as Hardwood Cuttings.
Isn’t that crazy? Stick a twig in the ground in the dead winter and get a new plant, or 100 or 1,000 new plants? That’s why I love what I do and love teaching it to others.
