NEW YORK—Distilling the variety and depth of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture, Shen Yun Performing Arts wowed the packed audience at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Thursday April 19.
Cathy Tamraz, the CEO of Business Wire, a company that provides full-text press releases for organizations to news media, financial markets, and others, lauded the performance.
Shen Yun, she said, is “very uplifting” and gives great insight into the culture of China.
“I think it’s very open and just really trying to express what’s gone on in China and how beautiful the culture is, and bringing it out to the world is very [admirable],” Ms. Tamraz said.
The New York-based dance company aims to restore traditional Chinese culture after it was nearly lost during more than 60 years of communist rule, it says on its website.
Ms. Tamraz said the company is “able to express the culture and get everyone to really understand all the beauty that’s come out of China.”
The dance pieces in Shen Yun are drawn from the vast collection of legends and stories that were handed down over the years in China.
The company boasts a wide array of different dance pieces, using classical Chinese dance—one of the most comprehensive styles in the world—as well as different ethnic and folk dances. Classical Chinese dance, like many other art forms in China, has a history of thousands of years and is considered a complete system.
The performance also includes an orchestra that joins together Western and Chinese musical styles, and has a wide array of different colorful costumes.
“It’s just incredible,” she said.
Ms. Tamraz was particularly struck by the quality and color of the costumes. “It’s the top of the line,” she said, noting their “flowing” qualities. “It’s very beautiful,” she added.
