CHICAGO—Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company delivered a stunning performance at the Civic Opera House on April 20, according to Patricia Okenica, district manager for a non-profit educational organization.
She exclaimed, “It’s stunning! It’s stunning! The costumes are beautiful, and the dances I never realized were so intricate. Absolutely beautiful!”
Apart from entertainment, Shen Yun is a learning experience as well. “The story is very interesting to me because I have to admit that I didn’t know a lot about the culture behind the dances. It’s a wonderful experience for me to be able to learn,” she said.
Commenting on just how great of an experience Shen Yun is, she said, “I think I’m relating more to the visual part and the animation, and bringing the animation and the real dancers together is wonderful. It’s a great experience.”
Accompanying Ms. Okenica was her husband, Steve Hayes, an insurance executive. He said: “I think it’s fabulous, the colors, the choreography. As Patricia said, bringing the animation to the stage is quite unique and I enjoy that … It’s very entertaining.”
Carol Lynne Krumes, director of curriculum in Lake Forrest, part of a Mandarin Immersion program, was also in the audience. She said, “Just the whole idea of the history, China’s culture from thousands of years ago up till time. I heard a lot about the Monkey King so it was exciting to see that piece of it.”
“The folklore, the cultural piece, how important it is to the Chinese people. It’s like a lot of cultural pieces … and seeing that played out in the theater, so it’s beautiful. The combination of the dance is just amazing … their grace, their discipline is amazing,” Ms. Krumes said.
