NEW YORK—Shen Yun Performing Arts, which played at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Friday April 20, is “a miracle of beauty,” said Dr. Shoshana Riangel, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and a former dancer.

“It’s amazing. It’s incredible. I’m very fortunate to be here,” she said and called it a “spiritual and religious experience.”

The company, according to its website, seeks to restore traditional Chinese culture through the performing arts, using classical Chinese dance as its main form of expression.

“I’m loving every minute here. It’s a blessing,” Dr. Riangel said, adding that it is “so beautiful and so perfect.”

A number of the pieces in Shen Yun are taken from legends and stories passed down through Chinese history and contain the inner core of the country’s spirituality, the company’s website states.

“It’s really moving. Sometimes … tears come to me from the beauty,” she said.

Passed down for thousands of years, classical Chinese dance is among the most comprehensive styles in the world and is said to embody the essence of China’s culture, the company says.

The dance is both difficult to master and requires extensive training to master the movements, postures, and “very difficult jumping and tumbling techniques,” the company says.

Dr. Riangel noted the dance system “needs a lot of strength” and discipline to get right and one needs “to be focused all [the] time.”
