SYDNEY—“This performance was outstanding,” said Primary School Deputy Principal, Cate Ryan, during intermission at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday afternoon, May 2, where Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company continues to play during its 2012 season in Sydney.
“I think it’s fantastic. Really good combination of dance and the use of technology. It’s fantastic! Very smoothly operated, everyone in time, great music, it’s very good,” Ms. Ryan said.
New York-based Shen Yun is a classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
“Classical Chinese dance is at the heart of the performance, along with brilliant costumes, breathtaking projection, and an orchestra that combines both classical Western and Chinese instruments,” states the company’s website.
Ms. Ryan said she already knew a little about Chinese culture and that it was “really good seeing lots of things I know being pulled together in a story,” she said.
“I’ve seen lots of little shows before and when I taught we had Chinese students and Chinese teachers and they’d do dance … but this performance was outstanding–the timing and everything is so good,” she said.
The company’s unique story-based dances feature the lessons and values of 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture, and Shen Yun’s costumes are an integral part of the performance. They use bright colours to tailor and recreate hundreds of new pieces each season, the hand-made garments span China’s dynasties, regions, and ethnic groups, the company says, something Ms. Ryan enjoyed.
“The costumes are fantastic and I really love the way [they] use the technology and wove the story together, and even the use of the story tellers—the comperes, was excellent,” she said.
Two bilingual emcees lead the audience from piece to piece, explaining Chinese culture and history.
Ms. Ryan said she recommends the performance. “I highly recommend it … I think it’s great,” she said.
