Asteroid 2012 DA14 UPDATE

2012 DA14 is a near earth asteroid with an estimated diameter of about 45 meters and an estimated mass of about 130,000 metric tons. It will pass by earth on February 15th 2013.
The 2012 DA14 asteroid will pass closer than any other asteroid of its size in recorded history, according to astronomers. The distance between the asteroid and the Earth will be 0.09 LD (35,000 km or 21,000 miles). For comparison the moon is on the average of 238,857 miles from the earth.
The 2012 DA14 asteroid will actually pass so close to earth that it will pass between the earth and the geosynchronous communication satellites that orbit the earth.
Communication satellites are parked in geostationary orbits at 22,500 miles with less than two degree spacing. 2012 DA14 will pass THROUGH our communication satellite orbits twice: The first time will be on its way towards earth. The second time will be on its way away from earth. (continued below)
But will 2012 DA14 impact our communication satellites? According to Paul Chodas, a planetary astronomer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told National Geographic “That’s very unlikely, but we can’t rule it out,”
Asteroid and comet researchers will be gathering at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, U.S., to watch the event, but experts say there is little to no chance of an impact with earth. But keep in mind the asteroids velocity and energy will increase proportionately upon entering the influence of Earth’s gravitational field and any slight fluctuation could cause the asteroid to stray from its calculated course.
But theories are that if the entire asteroid did crash into the planet, the impact will be as hard as in the Tunguska event, which in 1908 knocked down trees over a total area of 2,150 sq km (830 sq miles) in Siberia. (source: extremumspiritum.com)

This is no planet killer but it would make quite a mess. Could be a candidate for the global coastal water event, if it triggered EQs. They may let it collide, unlike Eleinin which was blown up for our benefit. Certainly Earth is much too valuable to permit any serious damage to it. Anyways we are now the new Earth and have graduated from Level 0 to Level 1. Gonna be pretty interesting from here on out.
