NASA’s Voyager 1 is the first human-made object to venture into interstellar space, according to a new data analysis published in the journal Science on Thursday (Sept. 12). The probe, launched in 1977 to tour the solar system’s outer planets, is now about 12 billion miles from the sun. “We believe this is mankind’s historic leap into interstellar space,” said Voyager’s project scientist Ed Stone. “We can now answer the question we have all been asking — ‘Are we there yet?’ Yes, we are.”
