Comet Linear Debris Field Picked up on Secchi! An update on the incoming comet Linear and its shattered debris field said to dazzle Earth on May 24, 2014.
The “debris field” seen here is just the comet’s dust tail, which is not unusual. Not seen are the successive debris trails left behind in the comet’s many passes around the Sun. Most of that material is dust, but the comet has been seen shedding material up to 1mm in size. Presumably, the larger particles predominate at the late stage in the comet’s life since lots of the smaller sized particles have already been shed.
