safe_imageVividLife’s Kristen White welcomes Film maker Carla Sinclair and Activist Kate Reid to discuss their documentary Heal Myself which breaks down stereotypes to reveal the humanity within us all.

Heal Myself is the intimate portrayal of a teacher, turned musician, now activist. ListenCombining her talents to break down stereotypes, Kate Reid facilitates anti-homophobia workshops,  spreads awareness in schools and provides support to people from all walks of life.

Having felt patronized and ridiculed as a young girl, Kate Reid takes us on her musical journey of self healing as she articulates stand out moments from her life through song. This courageous woman stopped compromising the moment she armed herself with a guitar and reclaimed her voice.

Kate Reid – Musician, Educator, Activist

Given the all-persuasions crowds drawn to her shows, Reid is doing it for the ladies and everyone else with a yen for her fiery performances and rare ability to glide from laugh aloud sing-alongs to intense tales about the price some pay in staying true to their own trailblazing sexual identities.

Kate Reid continues to build her audience through tours, festival performances, educational programs and public speeches. She’ll be unapologetically flying the flag whether performing for large festival audiences, in clubs, house concerts or Pride events across the country. Says Reid, “I definitely like shaking up opinions and perceptions. And yet, it seems that my lyrics resonate with people from all walks of life, because the songs aren’t really about being queer, they are about being human. I also love seeing people howl, tap their feet and respond to what I am singing about, whether they get teary or they bust a gut laughing. That’s when I know I am doing my job right.”

Carla Sinclair – Director, Cinematographer, Editor

Carla has had a video camera in her hands since the age of 12. She went on to study Multimedia Production and Design at Selkirk College followed closely by an advanced diploma in International Digital Film. Having worked in Radio, Television, and Video Production, Sinclair has a knack for storytelling. Specially selected in 2008 to join Empty Cup Media, Carla acts as an editor, producer and videographer for a variety or corporate and personal projects.

Examples of Sinclair’s work can be found in the following films:

“By Accident” 2013 Hot Docs International Doc Challenge Selection (Director, Editor, Cinematographer)

“Defensora” Official selection International Columbia Gorge Film Festival 2013 (Cinematographer)

“Forget Me Knots” 2012 DATCA Award Winning Documentary (Co-Director, Cinematographer, Editor)

“Greening the Cube” 2010 Official Selection Greenbuild International, Globians Documentary Berlin International, Okanagan International and Rossland Mountain Film Festivals (Cinematographer)

Carla’s sensitivity to the human spirit guides her to take her film’s audience on an emotional journey. You may not know where you’re going to end up but you can be certain it’s worth the ride.
