Even when you have the best intentions, living an eco-friendly life isn’t always easy. This is because it’s difficult to break conventional habits such as driving to work, using the dishwasher and turning the heating up. These aspects of the daily routine are ingrained within us, so change feels unnatural.
But to tackle the issue of climate change and reduce our dependence on resources that will soon run out, we need to adjust our outlook towards modern living, which can be achieved through green concepts.
Some of the following ideas are fairly straightforward to implement, others are a bit trickier, but all can help preserve the planet and promote sustainability.
Conserve water
Even though preserving this precious resource is important, you also have to consider what the process of getting water from the source to your home involves. It must be pumped to a treatment plant, filtered, treated with chemicals and then pumped to your property. So, take shorter showers, don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth, let the rainwater nourish your lawn instead of using the hosepipe and use dishwashers on the eco-setting.
Conserve electricity
Many people do this to reduce their utility bills, but the main reason to conserve electricity should surely be to help the environment and lessen our dependence on harmful resources such as oil and coal. Simple tricks like lowering the thermostat in winter, turning off appliances when not in use and installing energy-saving light bulbs are all effective. But switching to wind or solar-powered electricity can make a huge difference.
Grow food
Importing fruits and vegetables from the other side of the world when they’re not in season doesn’t seem to make much sense. But you can avoid the grocery store completely and take things a step further by growing your own food.
This can be a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable activity, which takes you closer to nature too. Capitalize on the merits of your outdoor spaceat the same time and make it into an oasis with some bright flowers or wooden garden benches.
Start walking or cycling
Car manufacturers are obsessed with increasing efficiency and improving economy to secure more customers, but this doesn’t get to the route of the problem. In certain situations and circumstances, driving is unavoidable, but try and walk or cycle whenever you can.
Thankfully, more and more cities are introducing cycle lanes and walking is a great form of physical exercise. However, if your destination is too far away for either of these, consider carpooling or taking public transport.
Recycle
This doesn’t have to be exclusively for plastic bottles, cardboard boxes and aluminum cans. You can recycle almost anything with a bit of imagination and creativity.
Start a compost pile with vegetable scraps or repurpose old furniture into something else. Other items, which you no longer have a use for, can be “freecycled” and given away rather than going to landfill.
On the face of it, redefining your modern living to become more eco-friendly might seem tough. Once you change your way of thinking and adopt green concepts, though, a sustainable way of life can be achieved.
