(Before It's News)

While he admitted there was a number of mistakes in play calls from a season ago, it doesn’t sound like Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter will be giving up calling plays anytime soon.

The Bucs coach led the team to a 9-7 mark and they were in the playoff hunt up until the last week of the season, and you could tell there was progress for the young team this past season. Many sites, like sbobetasia feel the Buccaneers are a team that can win 9-11 games in 2017.

Koetter can get some advice from others on staff like offensive coordinator/receivers coach Todd Monken and quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian, but at the end of the day, it seems more and more like he’s going to be the one that makes the calls on the field for the Bucs, win or lose.

The coach was recently asked how long he has till he makes the play calling decision. “Until Sept. 10 next year,” Koetter said. “I have that long.”

Despite stating that, he was also quick to say he’s going to try to learn from 2016 mistakes, and make improvements for this next season as the Bucs look to challenge the Atlanta Falcons for the top spot in the division.

“I made plenty of mistakes, and I’m going to do better next year, I promise you,” Koetter said.

Last season the Bucs ran 1066 plays, averaging 5.2 yards per play. Not bad, but the team will have to do better if they want to be at the top of the NFL.

Take for example the Falcons, the NFC representative in the Super Bowl, and this past season they put up 6.7 yards per play, the best in the NFC and the entire NFL for that matter.

With another season of growth for quarterback Jameis Winston, the team should be able to get that offensive number up to six yards per game, a number it seems they are going to need to get to in order to make a long playoff run.

They also need a better and injury free season from running back Doug Martin, who was given a contract before the start of last season, one that makes him one of the higher paid running backs in the league.

Let’s see if Dirk Koetter can indeed figure out his mistakes, and make sure that the team will be able to make those advances in order to be one of the best teams in the league.
