Witness Statement: While checking cloud cover for astronomy I noticed a bright white light being followed by an aircraft displaying red military lights at a distance of about twice the width of a full moon. Viewing through binoculars the lead craft consisted of 1 bright white light and 2 dimmer white lights. The pair were first noticed in the northeast and crossed about 40 degrees of the eastern sky before going behind cloud in the southeast. At the last sighting the lead craft had increased the distance from the second to about 10 moon widths.
The sighting lasted about 6 minutes. The whole event was witnessed by a friend who was with me. Another friend also saw the last minute or so of the sighting.
We were unable to determine the altitude of the craft. The distance was also difficult to judge, however, no aircraft engine noises were heard which suggests they were a fair distance away, but not too far since individual strobe lights could be seen on the military aircraft. This would place them running from north to south down the North Sea.
