Blobfish Wins Vote As Worlds Ugliest Animal

Can you even imagine something that ugly. Well at least I now know that I’m not the ugliest creature on earth. No that’s the poor fish in the photo there. The Blobfish is about what its name says. It was not even discovered until 2001. It lives in the waters off Tasmania, Australia, and New Zealand. It gets around by mostly just drifting around to where the sea takes it but usually stays deep around 1500 – 2000 feet. The pressure at that depth is one of the reasons that the Blobfish is exactly like it is.
It was a vote by the British Public that picked the Blobfish by over 10,000 votes. The winner was announced at the British Science Festival at Newcastle. The runners up were the big nosed proboscis monkey, and the pig nosed turtle. I’m glad I wasn’t in that contest.
Scientists now fear that the Blobfish is endangered because it is caught by fishing trawlers and when the fish is brought up from the depths where it lives and eats crabs and lobsters it almost always dies when it is brought to the surface.
It does make me wonder if this fish was not discovered until 2001 what other stranger creatures might be living in the oceans depths that we have not yet discovered. I mean can you imagine the stories they would have told if one of these had washed up on a beach. Many people would have thought it was a fake.
