I was SO excited to see the aurora borealis Friday night! It rarely shows far enough south to catch it here, and even more rarely during a clear night, let alone in the summer. So of course I made plans to join some friends and make the most of the occasion.
The evening began with a board game night, though. Reese and Leap joined us for a second game of Betrayal At House On the Hill. I was thrilled when the haunt was triggered and I got to be the traitor. I won the game, too! Lots of fun.
Then it was time to make our way there. Forecasts said best viewing after midnight, so we took off shortly before 11 pm. I jumped into the lead car with Tad & Darcy, which left Gerick in a sourpussy mood, but oh well! (He rode with Reese and Leap instead and ended up sleeping in the back seat most of the time.) On the way there, it became abundantly clear that everyone else had the same idea, as traffic coming up from the gorge was bumper to bumper.
We made it to Crown Point/Vista House– but there was no parking within a mile, so we drove up and parked by Corbett Middle School by an open field with a clear view and waited for a couple of hours. And… as you already know from reading my title– NOTHING. We made the most of it though, joking and enjoying the refreshing breezes.
I was most bummed by the crazy crowds– who knew hundreds, if not thousands, of people would show up to watch the northern lights? On our way back, though, I found a pull over area on a plateau far above Vista House overlooking farmland that absolutely no one was using. A clear shot of the northern sky and no traffic to ruin your night vision! I told the guys this was a drill and the next time we heard that the aurora was going to be showing, we were waiting in the newly found spot that no one was thinking to use.
So next time– we have a plan at least.
