Trip To the Coast: Mo's & Haystack Rock

(Before It's News)

This weekend its all sunny weather and temps in the 70s, but Monday and Tuesday it will rain– so we wanted to make the most of the dry weather and take a day trip to the coast. Darcy, Tad, and his parents took their car– but Gerick and I tagged along in our own. Its a lovely drive to Astoria, Oregon– which is quickly growing on me the more time I've spent there (must be 3rd trip in last 2 months). The winding roads we took over the hills to get there was also both diverting and soothing.

It gave Gerick and myself some private time to talk, which we haven't had much of lately, and just some companionable silence as well. Eventually we reached Astoria, but we didn't spend too much time there– though I noted all the hippies and artists and very interesting businesses…! We drove through to Cannon Beach to walk around the touristy shops and walk on the beach (the wind make it brisk) and check out Haystack Rock, which this time of year has puffin colonies all over it. The young are practicing flying with their parents and circle around and around the rock, sometimes diving into the sea for food. That many birds on a giant rock in the ocean close to the beach circling 'round like that makes for quite a majestic sight.

Tad, as usual, was happily bouncing enthusiastically around and getting lots of stares. He ran into the water full out with bare feet and got his pants soaking wet! When he ran back, a crazy grin on his face, he suddenly stopped as he ran and fell backwards in this weird way– and then we realized that he ran into the kite line of a kid and clotheslined himself! We all laughed uproariously at this, especially when Tad just shook himself off then popped up and resumed his run, grin and all, like it never happened! Gerick and I giggled about that scene on and off all day long because it was just so visually hilarious!

There was some time commuting around the big rock and watching the birds, but soon we walked back and then went to find a Mo's for lunch. The crowd was thinning when we arrived for some excellent seafood (that was affordable) and we had a hardy lunch. They elected to spend more time checking out some things while Gerick and I headed home after that– just too tired to keep going at the rate of those giddy young people! We had a pleasant drive home.

We had BBQ chicken last night, and tonight we barbequed some steaks and had corn on the cob and potatoes with it. My poor stomach has shrunk from all the small meals I've been eating lately and I realized I haven't been this full in months. (I've actually lost 9 pounds in the last month and a half from all the work I've been doing, so I'm not going to complain too vigorously on that!)

Just like last night, we had a nice campfire in the back yard– there was some wind, so we kept it small and contained with a screen on top. Everyone was either hanging out on the deck or down in the yard by the fire until 11 pm. Long days, but we're having a good time and enjoying the brief respite from rain while we can!
