Is this what happens when lightning hits sand? It turns out that when lightning hits sand, it makes little holes in it. Sadly, this picture was part of an internet hoax that circulated in 2013.
It was made by a guy who goes by the name “Sandcastle Matt”. He described the structure as “the biggest sandcastle I’ve ever made”. It is an impressive sandcastle, but it’s not what happens when lightning hits sand.
“Sandcastle Matt” made the sculptor by stacking bits of sand on top of petrified wood. The full sculpture is seen in the video.
