Emerald City Comicon!
I went. I saw. I– bought a game expansion at a steep discount!
That's pretty much it. It was Sunday and so it was the last day, and I wasn't going to any panels or anything. Other than a few dark femmie comics and Elf Quest, I'm not into sequential story in the form of graphic novels, etc. Some are very cool, but it takes so long for them to be produced that I lose patience and am only too happy to supply the graphics with my own imagination using a book! LOL!
But really, the bigger issue is that I'm not into super heroes or many of the more popular types of comics. A few cool indie stuff I will pick up from time to time, almost always by female creators, but very little else in that genre.
And… the Con itself…
Very, very, VERY crowded– as in almost wall to wall people (on Sunday, mind you!) to the point you could only walk in a shuffle and kept running into people or being run into. I really, really, REALLY don't like extreme crowds like that.
There were some fun costumes, but it was hard to enjoy them because everyone was moving constantly and it was always more more more to see. Rather overwhelming!
I found an artist with a print I want to get later to put on my wall somewhere, and so I'll save up for that. (I got her card.) And I came across a game expansion to Betrayal At House on the Hill, called Widow's Walk, at a discount games section that thrilled me. It has been on my wish list for over a year, and I got it!
However, now that I've had the Comicon experience, I dare say I shall avoid repeating it. Not quite my thing. Outdoor faires and festivals in the summer– sign me up! Indoor crowded venues with not a lot I was interested in–? Not so much, I'm afraid. But I got my pass at a discount as well, so I still think it was worth it to go once and see. You gotta try new things if you want to expand your world, right?
I also liked visiting downtown Seattle. I went out to dinner with my friend after we left the con and I just had a great hamburger and fries and relaxed for a spell. I needed to come down from the crazy chaos of the day, and have some conversation. I definitely want to explore Seattle more in the future.
Another piece of good news is that even with all the crowds and newness of everything, I had ZERO anxiety. I had to get out of the crowd and sit down in a more open area between large sales rooms to rest at one point, but that's it. I brought my cannabis tincture mouth spray in case I couldn't handle it, but even though I don't like crowds, they don't scare me. It was stressful, but not frightening. There really is a difference.
And– in the end, I got to try out something new for size. Not everything is going to 'fit'- but that's perfectly okay.
